I had the best memory flood back to me yesterday as I was sitting on the couch with McKenzie. It was over an apple. A red delicious apple. Is there any other kind? When I was young my dad used to love apples. ALWAYS red delicious. He would sit on his recliner with a pairing knife and an apple and he'd shave bites from the apple. One for him, one for me. And together we'd eat the whole thing. I may be crazy, but I'm pretty sure an apple tastes totally different when you bite it than when you cut it like that.
So, last night while watching a little TV together, I grabbed an apple. Frank bought a bunch from Sam's last week, so these are HUGE apples. Grabbed a pairing knife and began to slice. One slice for her, one for me. And she giggled. She's not a huge apple fan, but last night there was something different about the way the fruit tasted. I could see it in her face. And I knew. I understood immediately that that was the juciest, crunchiest, freshest bite of apple she'd ever had. Must be the pairing knife!
I just watched her and smiled at how some things really do come full circle.
My dad used to do the same thing. I hadn't thought of that in a long time. We always had red delicious. My fave now is gala.
